London to Atlanta

Day 1 - Wednesday, September 10  2014
We'd spent the previous weekend with friends Steve & FFi and Teresa and Andy at the latter's home in Bosham. We got back on Tuesday afternoon and Dave & Di arrived a little later on the way to spending a a couple of weeks in France with S&F. We had a short while to reorganise our packing and do a bit of laundry and then all went out to dinner locally.
They all left at the crack to be in Folkstone for a train at about 8am and then we had a frantic morning getting ready to leave.
We took a cab to LHR at around midday and were very pleased to find that Pam's BA concessions had come up trumps and we had business class seats to Atlanta.

An uneventful flight and we arrived at Atlanta early evening local time. US Immigration was much quicker than on previous visits - the ESTA system and the local on-screen form filling system seems to make the queues move very quickly. So we were out with our bags within about 30 minutes of landing. Unfortunately, at Atlanta airport the hotel shuttles don't go to the International Terminal, only to the domestic one. So we had to get an airport shuttle from one to the other and then wait for a separate shuttle from the Hotel La Quinta where we were staying.

For some reason the shuttle only had the hotel name/logo at the front and on the driver's side, so when it pulled up alongside us we could only see a plain white bus. It took about 10 minutes before we realised...........put it down to jet lag.

Atlanta airport is vast so both shuttle journeys were about 15 minutes, even though the hotel is only just off airport.

It was during one of these shuttle journeys that I realised that I had omitted to pack my driving licence - a complete failure of my list system - and so I would not be able to drive at all during the trip. Idiot.

Just after we arrived at the hotel Barack Obama came on the TV to address the nation about his strategy for dealing with the situation posed by the "Islamic State" group in Syria and Iraq. I suppose it might turn out to have been a historic moment but, despite the great hope generated by his election, he really doesn't seem to be a very inspiring leader. Perhaps it's just his personal style, but he looks like he is just going through the motions without any significant enthusiasm or determination.

After this somewhat depressing interlude it was about  3am UK time so we just turned in.
